Adventure comedy film The Princess Bride has gained a cult following since its 1987 release, and is now widely considered a classic by many film enthusiasts. Those who were unable to catch the film in theaters during its initial theatrical run are in luck, as The Princess Bride has returned to theaters for a short window as part of the classic-film program, Flashback Cinema.
The film hit select theaters throughout America on Saturday, January 26, 2025, and will remain available to view at these locations for two additional days. Sunday, January 26, 2025, and Wednesday, January 29, 2025, will provide opportunities for moviegoers and fans of the quote-heavy flick to catch a glimpse of the film’s classic characters and scenes on the big screen.
Starring Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, and professional wrestling legend, Andre the Giant, The Princess Bride offers a whimsical tale of a farmhand seeking to rescue a princess from a dastardly prince.
Author William Goldman adapted the film for a screenplay from his own novel of the same name, originally published in 1973.
The film was directed and co-produced by acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, with music by Dire Staits bandleader and future electric guitar icon, Mark Knopfler.
Though initially released to little in the way of commercial fanfare during its theatrical run, The Princess Bride has steadily accumulated popularity in the decades since its release. In 2016, the Library of Congress designated the film as being significant in a historical, cultural, or aesthetic context, declaring it as warranting of preservation as part of the U.S. National Film Registry.
Additional information on Flashback Cinema, including details on scheduling and upcoming classic film theater runs, can be found at the Flashback Cinema website. A list of theaters which will be screening The Princess Bride as part of this month’s Flashback Cinema programming can be found below.
