Los Angeles instrumental quartet, The Bombillas have officially released their new single “Hatif” this week via F-Spot Records.
The groove-heavy funk affair draws inspiration from world music such as 70s African and Middle Eastern styles as well as eclectic psychedelic soul.
Thick synths and expansive lead guitar lines that ebb and flow populate the tune, which offers up an intense wah-laden guitar solo near the finale. Intertwining melodic lines from guitarist Tyler Nuffer and keyboardist David Michael Celia weave in and out of one another to create a vivid experience over drummer Joey Campanella and bassist Josh Winer’s locked-in groove.
”Imagine speeding down Highway 10 into the desert at sunset, top down with one hand on the wheel,” reads one characterization of the new single. “You end up all alone at night and hear a mysterious voice calling, screaming in your ear, but nowhere in sight.”
“Hatf” is backed by a second original composition from the band, “Kidi Bloom,” which conjures images of the desert night by way of vibrant lap steel lines by Jungle Fire’s Patrick Bailey.
The melodicism and instrumentation of Celia and Nuffer engage in a back-and-forth exchange of ideas, reflecting a mysterious encounter between a lone wanderer and an unnamed higher power, manifesting what is ultimately a highly cinematic sonic atmosphere which is complimented by sonic shades of western twang and psychedelic funk sensibilities.
The release follows that of The Bombillas’ instrumental single, “Senebi,” released in 2022, and the 2020 self-titled full-length album from the group.
The brand new single from Bombillas, “Hatif” backed with b-side tune “Kidi Bloom” is currently available to stream on all platforms. The single is also available for purchase as a seven-inch vinyl 45 record through F-Spot records.
