The month of February is being brought to a close with an influx of exciting new releases, including several full-length album drops from some of the most exciting artists currently working. Let’s hop right into what will be the final FRESH WAX recap for the month of February.

VERSKOTZI – “BETTER GET TO KNOW ME”

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist VERSKOTZI premiered the music video to his latest single, “Better Get to Know Me” this week exclusively through Digital Wax. The contemplative tune features lyrical explorations of spirituality and instrumentation reminiscent of some of the finest work from The Beatles.

SHINEDOWN – “DANCE, KID, DANCE”

Alternative rockers, Shinedown have continued to dominate rock radio and popular music charts with their latest single “Dance, Kid, Dance,” which has earned the band it’s 20th Mainstream Rock Number One hit on the Billboard charts. The band will be hitting the road in support of the single and its b-side, “Three Six Five.”

SPIN DOCTORS – “ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HEAVEN”

Spin Doctors this Friday released the second new single from the group’s upcoming album, Face Full of Cake. Following “Still a Gorilla” earlier this year, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Heaven” presents a fantasy world in which the amps all crank to eleven and Eddie Van Halen is around to help kick the summertime blues. The single precedes the first full-length album to be released by the band in twelve years, and its first to be released through Capitol Records.

OKONSKI – ENTRANCE MUSIC

Instrumental jazz trio Okonski have finally released the highly anticipated Entrance Music, a collection of meditative, emotionally stirring, piano-based cuts in the vein of icons such as Bill Evans and Chet Baker. The album was preceded by three single releases, “October,” “Dahlia,” and “Summer Storm.” Entrance Music is available to stream and purchase now through Colemine Records.

JON CLEARY & THE ABSOLUTE MONSTER GENTLEMEN – “SO DAMN GOOD”

Legendary New Orleans singer and musician, Jon Cleary is back with a brand new single, “So Damn Good.” Backed by his seven-piece ensemble of top New Orleanian musicians, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Cleary has laid down a full-length LP, The Bywater Sessions, set for release in April. “So Damn Good,” like is sister tracks comprising The Bywater Sessions, was laid down “the old fashioned way,” with members playing in a room together – and the vibe absolutely comes across in the latest from the veteran musician.

MARTY BOHANNON – A SCAR IS BORN

Veteran musical brothers, the Bohannons – Marty and Matt – each released their respective solo albums on Friday, demonstrating the unique compositional and musical proclivities of each musician. “Ally’s Ghost” immediately establishes the atmosphere for A Scar is Born, with jittering drums and delicate vocal melodies countered by dirty, bluesy lead guitar passages that, quite frankly, rock hard. This sort of vibe permeates the record, particularly throughout cuts such as “For Verena” and “Shotgun Shell.”

MATT BOHANNON – GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS

The new solo LP from Matt Bohannon, Go Back to Your Roots dropped alongside that of his brother on Friday, delivering the remainder of the album’s material in the wake of singles “Home Alone” and the transcendent “On the Moon with a Cigarette.” Though at times a quieter, more meditative affair than A Scar is BornGo Back to Your Roots is not without its fair share of cranked chords and soaring lead sections. The premeditated drop of albums from both the Bohannon brothers in conjunction with one another offers a wealth of fantastic new material through which to dig from two of the most consistently reliable veterans in the game.
