The legendary, eclectic American rock band, Little Feat has begun staging a comeback with the release of the brand new single “Too High to Cut My Hair,” and the announcement of an upcoming full-length album.
Formed in 1969 by late musician and songwriter Lowell George, Little Feat would prove to be a substantial influence on some of the most successful musicians and groups of the past several decades, with top-tier artists such as David Crosby, Jimmy Page, and Bob Dylan having been among those to have cited the group as an influence.
The band, known for their creative stylistic blends of elements from the rock, blues, and country genres, have announced their return with “Too High to Cut My Hair,” a funk-infused number penned by multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett, whose history with Little Feat dates back to the band’s early days.
”Fred Tackett shines all over this record, as he always does, but in particular in his writing,” says Little Feat bandleader, Bill Payne of the new single. “People love the humor in our records, a cherished entree to those when they find it. So I’m happy this song displays that humor, and in full.”
Lyrically, “Too High to Cut My Hair” was inspired by actual events, wherein Tackett had requested a trim from his wife in a New Orleans hotel room only to learn that she was, in fact, too high to cut his hair.
The single is priming audiences for the release of Strike Up the Band, which follows the release of 2024’s Grammy nominated Sam’s Place, and will serve as the first release of original material from the band since 2012’s Rooster Rag. Regarding the project’s significance among the group’s expansive and historic discography, founding keyboardist Bill Payne characterizes the record as a successor to 1988’s Let It Roll.
”We are in a similar position to introduce Little Feat once again with this new collection of songs,” says Payne. “It is my feeling that, from what we had been playing over the last few years, there’s no question the overwhelming majority of fans would accept the album for what it is: an unmistakable iteration of Little Feat that highlights, with great songs and musicianship, the very best of an ongoing legacy, expressly evoking and expanding upon what people think of when they hear Little Feat.”
Strike Up the Band was produced with Vance Powell – known for his work with the likes of Phish, Jack White, and Chris Stapleton – and features collaborations with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke, Larkin Poe, Molly Tuttle, and more.
”In the end, Little Feat is a sound and a feeling, you know when you hear it,” singer Scott Sharrard said. “We humbly offer you Strike Up the Band, Little Feat’s new album of 13 original songs. Turn it up and let it roll.”
The legendary group will be hitting the road in support of the new collection, bringing the material to venues across the country as part of the Strike Up the Band Tour. Upcoming performance dates for the group can be seen below.
”Too High to Cut My Hair” is currently available to stream on all platforms, along with the new music video for the single. Strike Up the Band is set to see its official release on May 9, 2025, through Hot Tomato records.
