Dayton, Ohio songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, M Ross Perkins has logged the latest evolution of his ever-expanding sound with the new album, What’s the Matter, M Ross? released this month through the Karma Chief imprint.

The 15-song release finds the songwriter looking inward and filtering the results through his signature melodic lens of winding harmonics and classic pop textures to create a powerhouse English pop record that just happens to be 100% American in its makeup.

What’s the Matter, M Ross follows 2022’s E Pluribus M Ross, also released through the Karma Chief/Colemine Records imprint to critical acclaim. Listeners cited Perkins’ thoughtful and musically informed songwriting as highlights of the release, and the Dayton natives brings these qualities and more in spades as part of the follow-up.

Impressively enough, the record was cut in its entirety in Perkins’ Ohio home, with the musician taking on all the instrumental performances himself in the vein of Paul McCartney and Prince before him. This approach was also taken for his previous full-length effort three years prior.

Tracks such as “Hey Man/Hey Self,” “Spiritual Kick,” and “Gone (In the Morning,)” effectively encapsulate Perkins’ penchant for psychedelic pop stylings paired with introspective artistry – the latter a characteristic which has been amplified noticeably for the artist’s most recent release.

With existentialism and confessionalism being brought together to great effect, What’s the Matter, M Ross, offers a distinct window into the creative and artistic process of M Ross Perkins, whose artistic evolution continues to astound with further development of compositional hallmarks first mastered by The Beatles decades ago.

What’s the Matter, M Ross is now available to stream and purchase through Karma Chief/Colemine Records.
