Minneapolis-based producer and multi-instrumentalist GrayBeat has released his latest project, Special Characters.

The 11-track collection blurs the lines between electronic, jazz fusion, and experimental music, and features seven newly remastered tracks and four extended live studio remixes. The album as a whole serves as a vivid portrait of GrayBeat’s transformation from improvisational drummer to boundary-pushing producer.

The title Special Characters carries a dual meaning. On one hand, it honors the many musical collaborators and influences who helped shape the project’s creative direction. On the other, it nods to the complex technical hurdles GrayBeat overcame during its creation — a subtle wink to his background in software development and digital production.

“The songs on this album were written and produced during a critical stage in my development,” said GrayBeat. “The title is about both the people who helped me find the sound, and the strange, sometimes frustrating technical challenges I ran into while making it.”

Originally a jazz fusion drummer with a passion for improvisation, GrayBeat brings a distinct rhythmic and performance-focused sensibility to electronic music. That versatility is reflected throughout Special Characters, where deep grooves, ambient textures, and glitchy melodic structures flow together to create an immersive and often cinematic listening experience.

Beyond the music itself, GrayBeat’s performances are uniquely multi-dimensional. Leveraging his background in software development, he builds custom systems to drive his live audio/visual show — turning what could be technical limitations into moments of innovation.

“I wanted to take what I knew from coding and use it to expand what was possible in live performance,” said the artist. “This isn’t just pushing buttons. It’s composition, it’s reaction, it’s storytelling.”

The cover art for Special Characters captures this duality perfectly. A mysterious alien figure in a lab coat beams out rainbow-colored rays composed of symbols like “@”, “#”, and “$”. This alien, GrayBeat says, represents the intersection of scientist and artist — a creator who sees beauty in systems and turns obstacles into opportunities. The rainbow wave also features visual icons from the artwork of each single on the album, connecting the individual songs into one fluid narrative arc.

Despite its experimental edges, Special Characters is anything but abstract. The album pulses with feeling. Each track unfolds with a balance of heady complexity and emotional clarity — music that, in GrayBeat’s words, “requires further listening to discover and re-discover all the delightful musical colors and flavors.”

“It’s kind of a paradox,” said GrayBeat. “There’s a lot happening under the surface, but it always feels like one continuous experience. That was the goal — to make something expansive but cohesive.”

Special Characters is now available on all major streaming platforms. Whether you’re a fan of analog synths, digital trickery, jazz-minded grooves, or all of the above, GrayBeat’s latest work offers something uniquely rewarding — a sonic journey defined by curiosity, resilience, and transformation.
