The vibes are back! Ohio-based instrumental jazz trio, Okonski have released a brand new single, “Easy”. The release marks the group’s first since the release of their sophomore album, Entrance Music.

“Easy” serves to continue the steady sonic development of the trio’s expansive sound. The new single brings the focus in to emphasize the rhythm section. Here, drummer Aaron Frazer and bassist Michael Montgomery conjure up the vibe of an instrumental hip-hop opus – inverting the traditional sample-driven musical formula which historically draws on the reimagining of older tracks.

Pianist and band namesake, Steve Okonski largely avoids occupying too much sonic space early on in the track. Dodging the typical rhythmic cues, the piano accompaniment exists almost as a fog of sorts at this juncture in the tune’s construction.

As further elements begin to reveal themselves, the song opens itself up to offer a bombastic lift culminating with a shimmering summit of sound underscored by the blare of the classic Hammond organ.

Okonski is known to identify much of the group’s material with particular places, times, and seasons reflected either in the writing or vibe of the material itself. He likens “Easy” to a meandering stroll through the streets late at night – no particular objective in mind and perhaps no real sense of direction for the subject of the journey.

“This track harkens back to late nights walking around the city without any real place to go,” Okonski explained. “With no real purpose or destination in mind but ending up right where you’re supposed to be.”
